Chelation Therapy:
What's The Problem?
By William G. Drew Ph.D
Chelation therapy is a safe,
effective and relatively inexpensive treatment that restores
blood flow in patients suffering from atherosclerosis. Chelation
therapy is used to reverse the symptoms of hardening of the
arteries, also known as atherosclerosis or arteriosclerosis.
Atherosclerotic plaque formation is caused by multiple complex
factors with the end result being plaque formation which blocks
the flow of blood. Plaques are composed of fibrous tissue,
oxidized cholesterol (primarily oxidized LDL-cholesterol) and
calcium with some heavy metal involvement. Plaques can lead
to heart attacks, strokes, senility and peripheral vascular
diseases that often necessitate amputations of the extremities.
Cardiovascular Disease is Big Business
Plaques in arteries are big
business for organized medicine. In 1994 there were 373,000
open heart procedures in the US and 748,000 worldwide. But
bypass surgery is exceptionally dangerous with upwards of 10%
of patients dying as a result of the surgery. But the problem
doesn't stop there. Bypass surgery represents the mechanical
repair of only a small portion of the arterial tree and to make
matters worse, it uses diseased "pipe" to make this
repair. Total costs average about $45,000 and can be as high
as $60,000 or even more.
Balloon surgery,
or angioplasty, is far more popular and is practiced by greater
numbers of physicians. In fact, the competition for patients
between hospitals and cardiologists has never been more intense
or aggressive. At the present time there are in excess of 1,800
independent and hospital-based cardiac catheterization centers
in the US The costs associated with cardiac catheterization
when performed by cardiologists is in excess of $20,000. The
cost of angioplasty now averages $22,000.
One out of two people will die from
cardiovascular disease. There are approximately 2 deaths
per minute.
How Chelation Therapy Works
Chelation therapy is a non-surgical
therapy that utilizes a synthetic amino acid called ethylene
diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) to bind and remove undesirable
substances from the body including heavy metals and calcium,
known components of arterial plaques. Actually, the EDTA used
in intravenous chelation therapy is not pure or free-form EDTA,
but a sodium and magnesium salt of EDTA, possibly Edetate.
With more than
6000 published studies and with more than 4 million chelation
treatments having been performed, chelation therapy has been
proven to improve blood flow throughout the entire vascular
system. Every single study of chelation therapy for atherosclerosis
ever published has found, without exception, highly significant
improvements in blood flow throughout the entire body along
with many other benefits.
Thousands of
studies point to the inescapable conclusion that chelation therapy
dramatically improves health. This is primarily related to
the ability of certain amino acids to bind (i.e. chelate) and
remove those materials that cause arterial blockage. For example,
throughout your lifetime your body has been accumulating dangerous
heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, cadmium, aluminum, thallium,
thulium, beryllium, mercury, etc. The ability of these metals
to spawn millions, even billions of free radicals within just
a few minutes is legend.
If you think
that you are not afraid of free radicals you might better think
again. Free radicals as are equally as dangerous as gamma radiation
or other forms of radioactivity and can cause rapid aging as
well as make many disease states much worse.
Free radicals
are increased by the presence of heavy metals and act as a chronic
irritant to blood vessel walls and cell membranes. Think of
these heavy metals as "free radical generators." Until these
free radical generators are removed from the body, they will
continue to deplete your body's store of antioxidants. So you
have to take more antioxidants just to neutralize the free radicals
generated by the heavy metals. As your body levels of heavy
metals increases you must also increase your levels of antioxidants
just to stay even. If the accumulations get large enough, they
can easily overpower the nearly depleted reserves of antioxidants.
It's at this point that your health begins to plummet. Millions
upon millions, even billions of free radicals are now released
to totally wreck your body.
With more than 6000 published studies
and with more than 4 million chelation treatments having been
performed, chelation therapy has been proven to improve blood
flow throughout the entire vascular system.
Chelation Clears Blocked Arteries !
EDTA removes
these metallic irritants, allowing leaky and damaged cell walls
to heal. Once the free radical-generating-metals have been
removed, the body's immune system cells move in to remove the
material along with other debris built up in the arterial walls.
Plaques literally smooth over and shrink, allowing more blood
to pass. Arterial walls become softer and more pliable, allowing
easier expansion.
Thousands of
studies now show that without exception, intravenous EDTA chelation
therapy leads to blood flow increases. Health restoration is
directly related to increased blood flow. And if this weren't
miracle enough, the cost for intravenous chelation therapy is
only a fraction of the cost of coronary or peripheral bypass
surgery.
The average
cost for an intravenous chelation treatment is $175.00 in North
Carolina and somewhat lower across the southeastern US where
the average cost is $125 per treatment. A complete cleanout
of the cardiovascular system usually requires about 30 treatments.
If all you
were paying for was the chelation treatment itself 30 chelation
treatments provided by an ACAM-certified physician would cost
between $3,500 and $3,750. But there are additional costs involved.
There are the costs of the initial physical, routine blood work,
required and necessary intravenous supplements every seventh
treatment and the cost of the nutritional supplements which
must be used on a daily basis to prevent serious depletion of
essential minerals and vital metals such as iron and zinc.
Together these
costs add up and easily reach totals ranging from $5,000 to
$6,000 for the 30 treatments. In other words, while you are
paying direct costs of $125 for the treatment at the time you
receive it, you end up paying from $166 to $200 per treatment
when the other variables are figured in. While $5,000 to $6,000
may sound like a lot of money to clear arteries, remember two
things: (1) compared to the surgical alternatives, there is
no comparison, and (2) chelation restores your health and vitality
with the end result, you feel good! That doesn't happen with
the surgery.
Your cardiovascular system contains
more than 60,000 miles of arteries, capillaries and veins,
every inch of which is cleaned by EDTA !
It costs upwards
of $300 million to receive FDA approval of pharmaceuticals today.
Accordingly, pharmaceutical companies will not undertake such
expenditures of time and financial resources to get FDA approval
for drugs unless there is a strong probability that they will
realize a profitable return on their investment. With drugs
that enjoy the profits that patent protection affords, paybacks
are assured. But with drug products that are already in the
public domain such paybacks are not possible and therefore are
viewed as "useless" therapies by the FDA, the AMA
and all of the major pharmaceutical manufacturers.
EDTA is not
patentable. Because of this, the FDA erroneously contends that
EDTA chelation therapy is useless because it hasn't been validated
by double-blind clinical trials. Yet there are double-blind
studies that clearly prove the supreme effectiveness of chelation
therapy. In fact, many studies show its superiority. The only
thinking conclusion that can be drawn from these facts is that
the FDA has chosen to ignore the published facts. It's funny
that demands for "scientific medicine" only apply to therapies
that the FDA doesn't want approved. But what they never tell
you is that there are NO double-blind studies on the bypass
or angioplasty procedures either. Imagine that.
The current
health care delivery system effectively excludes the development
and utilization of alternative medical treatments even if such
treatments are proven to help patients and have been proven
to be safe. The antiquated and highly touted FDA approval process
(?) not only discourages innovation, but discourages all but
the largest pharmaceutical companies from seeking FDA approval
for a treatment. This approach, which is supposedly currently
under attack, works to exclude the contributions of innovative
practitioners, scientists and smaller pharmaceutical companies
that do not have the financial resources to complete the costly
FDA approval process. This atrocious approval process is highly
effective in preventing low-cost treatments (e.g. EDTA, Vitamin
E, Vitamin C) from gaining access to the markets. It represents
megamarketing at its best!
Insurance Company Reluctance to Pay
The FDA does
not regulate the practice of medicine but limits the marketing
and advertising claims for drugs. The FDA has approved marketing
claims for the use of EDTA to treat lead poisoning and several
other conditions. Treatment of atherosclerosis is not yet an
allowable claim for inclusion in the marketing literature of
EDTA. Because of this, insurance companies have refused to pay
for EDTA chelation therapy. The question this automatically
raises is "Why?"
Most medical
insurance companies, including Medicare, claim to be financially
depleted by paying for so many expensive surgeries. While this
is probably true it is not the entire story.
Insurance company
premium levels are determined by costs. As costs increase,
premium payment levels also increase. State insurance commissioners
monitor such increases and regulate premium payment levels.
The fact is most insurance companies cannot afford to cover
low cost therapies such as chelation because the department
of insurance in any given state would subsequently demand that
consumer health insurance premiums be lowered.
Chelation therapy is known to halt
the progress, even reverse Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease
as well as reverse the damaging effects of a stroke.
But that is
not the only reason that insurance companies will generally
not cover chelation. Segments of the health care industry which
profit greatly from surgical procedures are politically powerful.
Physicians who review claims for medical insurance companies
often favor the extremely expensive and risky procedures, such
as bypass surgery, while refusing to pay for equally beneficial
or more beneficial and far less expensive and immeasurably
safer chelation therapy. While insurance policies do not specifically
exclude chelation therapy in their policies, patients have
often had to resort to the courts in order to collect their
insurance benefits. If the fear of censure could be removed
along with the fear of FDA raids, many health insurance companies
would reimburse patients for less-expensive approaches to health
care including chelation therapy.
The REAL Underlying Threat
Here is the
real kicker. If you could eliminate cardiovascular diseases,
you would effectively eliminate virtually 80 percent of all
diseases suffered by mankind. EDTA has the potential to restore
the cardiovascular system to near perfect health. This, by
inference then means that EDTA has the potential to eliminate
most all of the diseases suffered by man worldwide. If a therapy
this effective were granted full approval by the FDA, the result
would be massive wholesale improvement in the health of millions
of Americans. The number of patients needing to be hospitalized
would dramatically decrease. Insurance premiums would plunge
precipitously and health care costs would return to manageable
levels. But the medical establishment is not about to let this
happen. Similarly, the insurance industry, which is caught
in a public service catch 22 relating to allowable premium charges,
is not about to let it happen either.
Because EDTA chelation therapy may
effectively eliminate most cardiovascular and circulatory
diseases, it has the potential to negatively impact the profitability
of the medical monopoly at a rate approximating $4 billion
per day!
Organized medicine
is currently a $1.4 trillion industry, up from $900 billion
in 1993. Any treatment that would eliminate cardiovascular
and circulatory diseases would significantly impact the entire
medical monopoly. If EDTA chelation therapy effectively eliminated
all cardiovascular and circulatory diseases, this form of therapy
would potentially impact the industry to the tune of about $4
billion per day! If EDTA therapy proved to eliminate only one-half
of the cardiovascular and circulatory problem, the impact would
still be gargantuan at about $2 billion per day!
EDTA has the potential
to eliminate most all of the diseases suffered by man worldwide.
If a therapy this effective were granted full approval by
the FDA, the result would be massive wholesale improvement
in the health of millions of Americans. The number of patients
needing to be hospitalized would dramatically decrease. Insurance
premiums would plunge precipitously and health care costs
would return to manageable levels.
Oral Chelation to the Rescue
Oral EDTA preparations
are highly effective chelating agents. Most are able to bond
with heavy metals and remove them from the body as well as form
stable and soluble complexes with calcium. Heavy metals chelated
by EDTA and calcium chelated by EDTA are easily excreted by
the kidneys. It is essential that lots of water be consumed
during any type of chelation therapy as the removal of toxic
metals is extremely reliant on fully functional kidneys and
an open, functioning intestine.
In order for
orally administered EDTA to be effective in the arteries it
first must be assimilated (i.e. absorbed into the blood stream).
EDTA is assimilated in the first section of the intestines --
the duodenum. It is not damaged or destroyed by stomach acid.
In fact, stomach acidity has nothing to do with the assimilation
of free form EDTA or any other amino acid for that matter.
And, no digestion is required for EDTA to be assimilated. It
simply moves into the blood stream from the duodenum with more
than 80% being assimilated (i.e. absorbed).
Spirit of Healing
(SOH) has recently introduced a new oral EDTA chelation program
built around a product sold under the trade name Oral
Chelate. Oral Chelate is actually a mixture of free
form EDTA buffered with a combination of 16 other free form
amino acids and vitamins. The daily dose is 3 capsules which
provides a dose level of 400mg of EDTA. The assimilated dose,
if 80%, would be 320 mg. The Spirit
of Healing Chelation Program recommends taking 6
capsules daily for a total of 800mg of EDTA per day.
SOH Oral Chelate
taken daily provides relatively constant blood levels and subjects
the body to the cleansing benefits provided by more than 5.6
grams of EDTA per week (5600mg). In contrast, intravenous chelation
with EDTA typically employs a dose of only 3.0 grams per infusion.
Most i.v. chelation patients receive only one treatment per
week. With i.v. chelation, most of the effect is measured in
the first 24 hours. This means that during the other 6 days
in the week little chelation is possible.
SOH Oral Chelate
contains 17 total ingredients. Each bottle contains 4.8 grams
of two different chelating amino acids in addition to 12 grams
of free form CaEDTA. This is important because EDTA, by itself,
will not remove all metallic minerals and heavy metals from
the cardiovascular system .
SOH Oral
Chelate also supplies a host of nutriants, full complex B vitamins,
vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin D. SOH
Oral
Chelate also contains lipoic acid and reduced
glutathione which are also strong chelators. Oral Chelate also
incorporates Chlorella which helps to pull various forms of
vaporus mercury out of cell membranes so the EDTA can bind
to it. So it is clear that Oral Chelate really has no competition.
When used with Min-er-All,
a colloidal mineral complex, there is nothing on the market
which can even begin to compare. Min-er-All is available through
Spirit of Healing.
Oral chelation
with Spirit of Healing's Oral Chelate products can be just as,
if not superior to intravenous chelation. As mentioned above,
SOH Oral Chelate contains 17 nutrients and 12 grams of EDTA
at a cost of $29 per bottle. It would take 4 injections of
intravenous EDTA chelation to obtain the 12 grams of EDTA available
in one bottle of SOH Oral Chelate.
EDTA cannot
remove plaque from the walls of arteries when the body's pH
is too acidic. Since most people eat a faulty diet entirely
too rich in simple and complex carbohydrates, the result is
an acid pH. Keeping the body's pH alkiline enables EDTA to
chelate inorganic calcium and heavy metals from the arterial
plaque.
There are many EDTA-based oral chelation
products on the market but most contain far too little EDTA
to be effective.
Nutritional
deficiencies are typical in patients suffering from diverse
cardiovascular diseases including atherosclerosis. Nutritional
deficiencies reduce the effectiveness of EDTA. Equally as important,
EDTA is "blind" so to speak and can chelate good nutrients from
the body at the same time it removes the bad things. So it
is important that anyone undergoing any form of chelation
therapy replace the "good" nutrients, particularly minerals,
on a daily basis. Since the Spirit of Healing program produces
such powerful effects, it is very important to provide as many
nutrients as possible during the SOH chelation program.
