Pretty Eye: Native
American herbalism has brought many valuable medicinal
plants into Western herbal practice over recent centuries.
Pretty Eye combines several of these for strengthening
the eye and warding off eye fatigue according to their
uses in this native healing tradition. In fact, Native
Americans frequently relied on Eye Root, one of their
colloquial names for Goldenseal, for "sore eyes". Goldenseal
has a historical reputation for improving circulation
to the peripheral parts of the body including the eyes.
Circulation to the eyes is important in maintaining
their healthy functioning.
Witch Hazel is highly prized in folk herbalism for toning
the blood vessels by reducing leakage, breakage and
engorgement, all aspects that may be present in tired
eyes. Although it is best known for its astringent qualities
for the skin, Witch Hazel was also traditionally used
for inflammation of the deep tissues of the eyes which
is thought to arise from overuse in many systems of
folk healing. Angelica, a favorite Victorian cottage
garden flower, is a native of Scandinavia that found
its way into European herbalism in the Middle Ages.
In this combination, it is included for its sedative,
muscle relaxing and pain-relieving properties as noted
in traditional folk literature. All three herbs in this
combination have a long history of use as tonics in
Native American and Eclectic herbalism.
